Using AI Tech in the Recording Industry

The Pros & Cons for Up-and-Coming Artists

The AI boom has revolutionized countless industries, including the music industry.  Particularly, raising the integration of various AI aspects, from music production, composition, and marketing, down to the analysis of audience participation.  Also, with the opportunities emerging for up-and-coming artists, more concerns breach the surface.  So, we’ll be looking at several pros and cons of the uses of AI technology in the recording process and the industry from the perspective of a recording artist about to emerge on the scene.

The Pros

The Enhancement of the Creative Process

Artists using AI tools, such as (machine-learned) generative algorithms, can be inspired or assisted in exploring compositions and ideas outside their relative musical norms.  With fresh chord progressions, melodies, or even lyrical ideas, these AI tools can help spark the creative vein that an artist can build on.

Reduced Production Cost

Using AI-powered plugins and virtual instruments, the process involved in producing professional-quality tracks can be achieved without the overheads of hiring producers, and engineers, or logging in some studio time.  It’s crazy, to think, that the democratization of music production through the various means of AI for the emerging artist has come to a level where polished recordings can be done on such a small and limited budget.

Streamlined Workflow

Repetitive tasks can be automated by streamlining the recording process.  Amazing!  When it comes to audio editing, mixing, and even mastering the final tracks, the algorithms used by AI can assist in bringing it all together.  As an artist, this enables more time to be creative and productive in creating music, not being bogged down with the technical aspects, or the learning curves involved in working with complex UI programs.

Using AI to Target Audience Insights

The amount of data involved in analyzing valuable audience insights is immense.  AI technology can target and analyze listening patterns, audience preferences, and demographics to help an artist customize their music and or strategies for effective marketing campaigns. Also, to help tailor a look and feel to gain a higher visibility to connect with fans.

The Cons

That Personal Touch or Expression

Some will argue that the potential loss of the “human equation” for unique artist expression can kill, an up-and-coming artist. Taking away, the refined compositions created individually if a heavy reliance on AI-generated content is used. This will create a soul-killing event for authenticity and originality in the ears of critics.

Homogenization and Overemphasis on Commercial

Artistic exploration could be sidelined.  With the integration and distraction of AI in the music industry the focus could be centered and focused on commercial successes.  The need to cater to popular trending styles or algorithms will run the risk of homogenization killing experimentation and diversity.  Artist beware.

Considerations for Ethics

In considering, the case of infringements in the music industry.  Copyright and intellectual property rights raise a butt-load of concerns; especially, when it comes down to the use, and implementation of AI-based technologies.  Companies developing AI technology using existing compositions, of music and or literature for machine-learning purposes, can produce, or inadvertently produce, material that closely resembles created works that are copyrighted, which can potentially lead to massive legal disputes and nasty infringement claims.  Machines “under the influence”, can generate some wonderful stuff but beware of the origins.

No Human Connection Whatsoever.

The thriving emotional force connecting musicians and listeners has always been intimate.  The nuances, resonance, and power of the human touch; are the qualities that move audiences and deeply affect them on so many levels, which AI has often had difficulty when replicating.  This gap will result in a loss of emotional depth, and sincerity in the music.  You might as well pull the plug.

In Conclusion

There are a lot of exciting possibilities, and the horizon is infinite for up-and-coming recording artists looking to explore AI technology to enhance or create new genres in music.  The effect on creativity while providing such a low cost in overheads for production, as well as production value, just can’t be beat!  With targeted audience insights, an artist can home in and exploit various avenues to create new music and tap into uncharted territories using the benefits of AI.

However, concerns are valid when it comes down to the potential loss of artistic authenticity.  The overemphasis on being commercially viable; along with all the trappings, and the ethical considerations for intellectual rights.  Also, the loss of the human connection and its impact on the music created.  The evolution of AI technology will continue; in changing the landscape for the music industry. So, it will be crucial, for the musician, to be vigilant. Striking balance, leveraging AI, and all its advantages, while preserving an emotional essence and authenticity as a recording artist, working in the music industry.  On a more sobering note, for the independent artist incorporating AI into the creative process and workflow, the technology will be a boon for regaining time and saving on expenses.  The flip side will be the impact of this technology across many fields, and the loss of coveted positions and salaries due to the prevailing winds of AI.

Some food for thought.
